What CHD does/did your child have? Atrial Septal Defect (ASD) and Ventricular Septal Defect (VSD).


What was done to correct this CHD? Open-heart surgery at 10 weeks of age.


Where was your child's surgery done? INOVA Fairfax Hospital for Women and Children.  Merrifield, Virginia (suburban DC)


Who did the surgery? Dr. Bechara Akl


When was the surgery done? October 16, 2003.


What did you think of the hospital and staff? Absolutely outstanding.  We could not have hoped or prayed for any better care for our daughter.


What did you think of the surgeon? Humble and confident.  He is an absolutely wonderful human being--he saved our little girl's life.  I believe that Dr. Bechara Akl is considered to be in the Top Ten of Pediatric Cardiovascular/Thoracic surgeons in the United States.


Would you take your child back to this facility/surgeon? Without hesitation.


Any advice for others looking at this facility/surgeon? Ask any and every question that comes to your mind throughout this entire process and the recovery of your child.  We would recommend Dr. Bechara Akl highly.  Dr. Akl does practically all pediatric heart surgeries at INOVA Fairfax.

What was done to correct this CHD? Open Heart Surgery at 6 days of age.


Where was your child's surgery done? Children's Hospital of the Kings Daughters- in Norfolk, VA


Who did the surgery?  Dr. Barnhardt


When was the surgery done? Jan. 10, 2005


What did you think of the hospital and staff? Absolutely fantastic! 


What did you think of the surgeon? Confident, caring, friendly, great bedside manner, able to explain things in terms we could understand.


 Would you take your child back to this facility/surgeon? Yes!  We wouldn't consider going anywhere else!


Any advice for others looking at this facility/surgeon?   Don't be afraid to ask questions!  It is your child after all.  The staff is more than happy to share any information with you that they can.  Also- at CHKD you have to pay for parking- get a monthly parking pass right in the beginning to save yourself alot of trouble!
