What was done to correct this CHD? Mitral valve repair, vsd repair, PDA ligation,
Ross-Konno procedure
Where was your child's surgery done? Riley Children's Hospital in Indianapolis,
Indiana
Who did the surgery? Dr. John Brown
When was the surgery done? 2-04
What did you think of the hospital and staff? Absolutely WONDERFUL!!
What did you think of the surgeon? He was honest and kind. He is ranked third in
the country. Thoughtful and kind always answering questions and coming in to
check on our little one.
Would you take your child back to this facility/surgeon? yes
Any advice for others looking at this facility/surgeon? They are wonderful. They
saved our little son. We are eternally grateful to them. And we will take him
back there for his valve replacements.

What was done to correct this CHD? Blalock Shunt @ 6 weeks, Catheterization @ 12 months, TOF Repair @ 16 months, Dual Chamber Pacemaker at age 4

Who did the surgery? Dr. John Brown (Shunt, TOF Repair, Pacemaker) and Dr. Randall Caldwell (Catheterization)
When was the surgery done? Shunt – 8/28/98, Catheterization – 7/21/99, TOF Repair – 10/04/99, Pacemaker – 07/23/02
What did you think of the hospital and staff? Wonderful, no complaints at all – professional, caring, loving – They are 100% there for the children.
What did you think of the surgeon? Excellent, I trust him completely.
Would you take your child back to this facility/surgeon? Yes, and I still do.
Do you have any advice for others looking at this facility/surgeon? Riley Children’s Hospital is one of the top children’s hospitals in the US, and Dr. John Brown is listed as one of the top pediatric cardiac surgeons in the US. His expertise, along with his dedication, is something every heart family should have the privilege of experiencing.

Dr. Timothy
Cordes,
Dr. Joyce Hubbard, and the Cardio Team
When was the surgery done? Sept. 1996
What did you think of the hospital and staff? Very caring, helpful, ready to
teach the parents and family on conditions, medications, treatments...very
family oriented
What did you think of the surgeon? At the time, straightforward. But looking
back, was good to be that way in our situation. Our daughter lived for 8wks,
where the phys didn't expect to make through surgery (which coded 2x's)
Would you take your child back to this facility/surgeon? We would have. If
anything was to happen to our surviving children, we would go right back.
Any advice for others looking at this facility/surgeon? The hospital is
wonderful, and our counselors were very helpful in finding room/board, items for
our HLHS baby. When off work for so long w/o pay, she even got a loan approved
for us to help out. When the unimaginable happened, she even helped us w/
arrangements for our angel, and everyone who was off from our ICU area came to
the funeral to show their support.

What CHD does/did you child have? TAPVR, 6 pulmonary veins
instead of 4
What was done to correct this CHD? pulmonary veins were going to his liver. He
required 3 open-heart surgery’s to repair this defect.

When was the surgery done? 10-14-02, 0-18-02, 05-05-04
What did you think of the hospital and staff? The Hospital was great! The PICU
nurses were nice, friendly, knowledgeable & skilled at their job.
What did you think of the surgeon? I love him! He saved my son’s life. He opened
his chest and operated on his heart when it was smaller than a walnut. He is
the most caring, gentle, & compassionate doctor I’ve ever met. He is very
particular about his patients, it is almost as if they are one of his own. He is
one of the best Pediatric CV surgeon’s in the nation. He is great and I wouldn’t
take my child anywhere else!
Would you take your child back to this facility/surgeon? YES
Any advice for others looking at this facility/surgeon? Just do lots of research
about the child’s defect and make sure you ask many, many questions. Keep track
of everything in a journal! And if you feel something is not right about your
child during his/her hospital stay make sure you stick to your guns. You know
your child better than anyone else!
Both surgeons’ at Riley are wonderful. They have a Nurse Practitioner available
24 hours a day (if the surgeon is in the OR) to answer questions/concerns you
may have. They are all wonderful, well educated, and very experienced in the
field of Pediatric Cardiovascular Surgery.
